The Team provided conceptual design for this innovative complete streets plan located in the City of San Marcos. This plan includes solutions for being designated Cal-Trans County Route S12 and the high volume of traffic and speeds that coexist with that designation, and the need for a safe, pedestrian oriented business district that the City desires.
Our Team worked with the multi-disciplinary team to design a complete streets solution that included directional frontage streets to slow down traffic adjacent to the businesses yet minimize disruption to the existing through traffic. The frontage roads were developed to support an enhanced pedestrian experience and create areas for café seating and small plaza gathering areas. The plan also incorporated new sharrow and designated bike lanes, and increased locations for mass transit stops ensuring a multi-modal transportation solution was attained in this project. Sensitive San Marcos Creek habitat and vernal pool habitat, located adjacent to the corridor widening, was identified and protected as part of the project design solution. Storm water is addressed in the design through a series of infiltration swales and tree canopy cover has been incorporated to reduce heat island effect. There are two high schools located at the west end of the project, so an emphasis of safe pedestrian passage was accomplished through enhanced pedestrian crossings and the addition of HAWK crossings at key locations. All these functional features have been designed and integrated in a contemporary way to compliment the community improvements the City is making in the adjacent San Marcos Creek Specific Plan area.
