The proposed design respects the unique and historic architectural characteristics and difficult site conditions, by organizing spaces and program goals in relationship to the project constraints, and succeeds in creating a beautiful and flexible courtyard space.
The area opens up to provide a medium sized plaza designed for flexible use by outdoor service events, smaller fundraising events, and individual reflection areas. This plaza area includes a colorful Bosque of trees to provide seasonal interest and color, as well as additional Sycamores for shading. There are simple seat walls located throughout for readily available seating for church members or visitors.
Inspired by the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Juan Diego, the shrine reaffirms the natural and serene atmosphere made to induce and inspire a state of meditation and introspection. Amenities are further enhanced by the addition of plaza pavers and terra cotta pots with colorful plantings, keeping with the Mission Revival architectural style. These elements are combined with the unique design of the Virgin of Guadalupe shrine to create a rich backdrop for personal experiences and larger events.
